Finally figured out how to upload stuff to my website's ftp server from behind the corporate firewall. All thanx to TransConnect.

I'm almost towards the end of EGB (Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid). I've immensely enjoyed reading the book, even though I did gloss over the parts where it required me to do some math. I guess I'd be coming back to it sometime again and finishing all the exercises and puzzles.

These days I'm reading Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid, an amazing book about almost everything. It is certainly turning my head into mush, forcing me to think about a lot of things which I had stopped thinking about a long time ago. Since childhood.

It is 4 am here in office and the Dell Inspiron 8500 is fully functional with Debian/unstable at last.  The only thing not working was the ACPI support; the laptop always ran on full speed and full power, hence getting very hot.

Finally I got debian up and running. I've been working on GNU/Linux for so long that I've forgotten how to deal with Windows. The most basic, sureshot, nuke-'em kind of solution: Reinstall!

The damn thing installed after an hour and now it refuses to recogonize my DVD/CD-ROM drive. So I'm back to installing XP Home.

For all practical purposes it turns my Rs 1 lakh laptop into a piece of junk.

I've been trying to get the Dell laptop to network under windows XP. So far it has proved to be a losing battle.

The version of XP I got is XP Home. Which does not support Windows domain controllers. Or more than 5 computers on the same network. And when I try to set up good ol' TCP/IP networking (an IP, subnet, Gateway address) it doesn't work. Arghhhhh...

I sit on the 4th floor. Whenever there is a mail/courier for me which requires my signature  (which is, almost all mail, since my cell service provider is paranoid that I might not get my bill (heaven forbid!), so they *have* to courier it ofcourse. So he persuaded me to get a laptop. He's paying.

I had to configure a freshly installed Win2k machine for a friend. So I go over and install Mozilla 1.4
 and Emacs for Windows. All nicely done and configured, with all the cool extensions
 from mozdev also put in.

Then on a whim I just installed the firebird nightly for windows.  And promptly fell out of my chair. The damn
 thing looks good, renders really well and is fast!

The IBM US ThinkPad model I had my eye on has TCPA chip built in...(see IBM security). Man, this sucks big time! 

Apparently Linux kernel will still work well, but TCPA sounds like a bad idea in conjugation with Palladium (for future windows versions). And future GNU/Linux versions might not be very runnable as this combo can effectively cirumvent the GPL . Read the TCPA/Palladium FAQ.

The new framework is based on Java and Beans. Atleast java is a proper language with good tools support, unlike PL/SQL (which is a kludge of control structures on top of SQL). The Jdeveloper IDE is pretty smooth, even if a bit buggy and unstable. Way better than developer IMHO.

A new release is supposed to go out soon and deadlines are fast approaching. One day stayed back til 5 am (think it was Friday). Today is a sunday and I'm still at it (though at a leisurely pace).

The final deciding factor was that the work was Tcl/Websites. If I want to make a jump, I think I'll do it for C/Unix or something like that. Agonized a lot over the decision. My manager helped me to see all the pros and cons (he lost a chance to get rid of me ;-) ). Anyway, let's see what pops up next.
